Bill was sitting at his computer, very late one night .... he had been cruising the aol chat rooms and various bulletin boards ... he was lonely inside and thought about how to meet a woman he could spend the evenings and the nights with (god willing) when he was travelling down south ... he was also getting ready to go to the Bay Area to look for clients and work so that he could get out of the north coast of Calfornia half of the time, at least ... he was planning to buy a boat, put it in the harbor in Sausalito and stay on it and use it as an office when he was down in the Bay Area.
That night he ran across a bulletin board and personals/ meeting place at what was called NetGirl.com. He wrote an ad and while he was doing it decided to just hope and be as honest as he could and try to describe what he really, truthfully wanted ... what eventually happened was ... he ended up with what he really wanted -- a life partner, Tara ... at the time he wrote this email he really was afraid to feel and admit to hisself that he was really looking for a mate, a partner, a love of his life ... his now dearest partner, mate and pal tara.
Tara read Bill's email on the NetGirl bulletin board on Tuesday, July 9, 1996 in her America Online system ... she then responded on July 13th at about 9:30 in the evening. Since then its just sort of been history.

I live on the northern CA coast (literally overlooking the ocean) and would like to meet a woman who lives in easy meeting distance. I am just beginning to sail on my own wooden boat and to take time from work .... looking for a woman to spend time off with, camp on the Mendocino/Humboldt/Del Norte coast, sail and park off the beach in Humboldt Bay, visit museums and galleries in SF, walk the docks of Sausalito, visit the aquarium and Robinson Jeffer's house in Carmel/Monterey, or whatever is fun, energizing and relaxing ... would really like to email and meet someone that lives within an easy drive of the Humboldt Bay area (where Hwy 101 and 299 intersect) ... if you live in No. Cal. you know the time it takes to get back and forth ... age, race, size, and shape aren't the criteria for a companion and friendship, for being happy around someone on days and nights off ... I am in decent shape, don't like gyms but love the exercise of hiking around, swimming naked in rivers when its not too cold, sailing hard ... 48, divorcee, high income professional college educated (don't let that intimidate you if you are not), 5'9", blue eyes, curlish hair, sometimes wear an earring when i feel in my outside the normal culture mood, love literature (especially modern american and european or esoteric and eastern religion), and obviously love to talk ... looking for the fun in life with a sometimes companion. Your personal ad on the coffee table keeps distracting me. I live in Berkeley and I
know how far it is to 299/101, I've done it a few times, actually love the drive, and it's
long. That kept me from emailing a response right away. And I keep resonating to things in
your ad like Tor House, sailing, museums and an occasional iconoclastic earring,
I'm a 46 year old fairly high income college educated
professional, 57', 144 # this morning, divorced, with an awesome 15 year old
daughter. In good shape from walking to/from BART and some occasional stairs,
threaten regularly to get serious about exercise, but haven't yet. I love reading,
from sci fi to leadership to shamanism; sing, dance sort of, love to listen to others'
stories and share my own. I delight in my body that moves me through the world and
has its own sensual presence. A playful, articulate, wide-ranging friendship,
companionship sounds great.
Fitting a 5+hour drive into my schedule occasionally isn't totally impossible, especially if we can rendez-vous half way or more now and then.
